Kim Jong-un was caught on camera looking baffled after Trump joked about looking 'nice and handsome and thin' during the summit in Singapore.
The President made the quip as the pair sat down with their aides for a working lunch at the Capella resort on Sentosa island.
As the men approached the table Trump turned to waiting photographers and asked: 'Getting a good picture everybody? So we look nice and handsome and thin and perfect?'
Donald Trump jokingly asked photographers if they were getting pictures of him and Kim Jong-un looking 'thin and perfect' as they sat down for lunch in Singapore
Kim was caught on camera looking completely nonplussed by the President's joke, though it is not clear if he understood what was said
After lunch Trump and Kim signed a joint statement agreeing to the 'complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' in return for 'security guarantees' for the North
The camera then pans around to Kim standing at the other side of the table with a blank look on his face.
The North Korean leader blinks a few times before taking his seat at the table.
It is unclear if Kim understood what was being said. He is believed to have studied for a time in Europe as a young man, so it is possible he understands some English.
Kim also had his translator alongside him when Trump made the quip, though they didn't appear to relate the remark to him.
Once they sat down at the table, the men enjoyed a lunch of prawn cocktail with avocado salad, green mango kerabu with honey lime dressing and fresh octopus and 'Oiseon' Korean stuffed cucumber as starters.
For the main course, the leaders had the choice of beef short rib confit, sweet and sour crispy pork and Yangzhou fried rice with chili sauce or soy braised cod fish.
Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream with cherry coulis, Tropezienne and a dark chocolate tartlet ganache were listed on a White House handout as the dessert options.
The pair dined on seafood, beef, sweet and sour pork, ice cream and a chocolate tartlet as they sat down with their aides
Trump also revealed that he will be stopping joint military exercises with South Korea in return for North Korea sending the remains of soldiers killed in the Korean War back to their families
Kim said it was time to 'leave the past behind' and move into a new era of closer ties between the USA and North Korea
Trump and Kim then signed a joint statement in which Kim reaffirmed his commitment to 'complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula'.
In return, Trump agreed to provide unspecified 'security guarantees' to North Korea.
In a subsequent press conference Trump also revealed that he agreed to halt joint military drills with South Korea, which he described as 'provocative' and a waste of money.
He also said he wants lift sanctions on North Korea 'as soon as possible', though added that sanctions would only be lifted once nuclear disarmament is underway.
He then expressed the desire to withdraw troops from South Korea but said the move was not 'on the table' at the moment.
In return, Trump said North Korea has agreed to destroy a missile engine testing facility and return the remains of US soldiers killed during the Korean War to their families.
North Korea did destroy a facility used to test ejection systems for its submarine-launched ballistic missiles last week, according to satellite imagery of the site, though it is not clear if this is the same one Trump was referencing.
