Two high school students from Baltimore and Washington DC have defied the odds after being accepted into all eight Ivy League schools.

Mekhi Johnson, of Baltimore, and Samantha O'Sullivan, of DC, are among just a handful of students across the US to be granted admission into all eight universities.

Johnson, who attends the Gilman School, said he was sitting in a booth at Red Lobster with his mother when he realized he had been accepted in a clean sweep.

'I didn't have words then, and I don't have words now,' he told the Baltimore Sun. 'I just felt extraordinary.'

The 17-year-old said he checked his Yale status first but quickly started ticking off the other top colleges too.

'As soon as I saw I got into Harvard, my mom started screaming,' Mekhi said. 'She started yelling, 'My son just got into Harvard,' and everyone in the restaurant started clapping.'

He said he had always wanted to be accepted to all eight school after hearing a story on the radio when he was six years old of a high school student who achieved the same thing.

Meanwhile, Samantha O'Sullivan, who attends the School Without Walls public school in DC, said she applied to several schools in the hope of narrowing the selection process.

'I thought that I'd just apply to all of them and see where I got in, and hopefully that would make my decision for me,' she told WUSA9.

As well as the Ivy schools, Samantha ended up being accepted into four other colleges.

Both Samantha and Mekhi are still unsure of which school they'll accept.

Samantha hopes for now to become an astronaut, while Mekhi is aiming to study political science and eventually end up at law school so he can help combat systemic racism.

The teenagers both had a lengthy list of extracurricular activities to their name
