Real Madrid issued a statement on Friday night that appeared to rule out a bid for Neymar this summer.

The club said: ‘Regarding the constant stories that link the player of PSG, Neymar, with our club, Real Madrid want to make it clear that we are not planning to make any offer for the player.

‘The relation between the two clubs is extraordinary, and therefore, the first thing we would do would be to direct [our interest] to the club.’

Florentino Perez wants to sign Neymar but PSG are refusing to let the player leave after just one season in Paris.

Next season a release clause kicks in which would allow Madrid to sign the Brazilian if they match the 222m euros that PSG paid for him last summer.

NEYMAR'S 2017/18 SEASON

Ligue 1: 20 games, 19 goals, 13 assists

Champions League: Seven games, six goals, three assists

Coupe de la Ligue: Two games, one goal

Coupe de France: One game, two goals

Total: 30 games, 28 goals, 16 assists

With every intention of making that move in 2019 they want to keep relations with PSG cordial which is why they have moved to silence talk of a bid.

The club are focusing their attention this summer on the possible acquisition of Eden Hazard and are also looking at bringing in a centre forward to cover the 40-goal a season deficit they now anticipate suffering, having lost Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus.
