Robbie Williams divided opinion as he headlined Thursday's opening ceremony ahead of the World Cup in Russia.

Fans at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium and millions watching around the globe witnessed Robbie Williams perform three tracks, including his 1998 single 'Let Me Entertain You' and 2002 hit 'Feel'.

Williams, who was briefly joined on the pitch by Ronaldo and Miss Russia 2003 Victoria Lopyreva, also belted out 'Angels' as a duet with operatic performer Aida Garifullina.

Former Spain captain Iker Casillas, 37, and 36-year-old Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova had earlier brought the trophy out onto the pitch ahead of the festivities.

The ceremony's grand finale lasted little more than 10 minutes, but Robbie made a strong impression nevertheless.

The 44-year-old wore a loud red suit, sparking multiple Twitter users to make reference to his 'sauce'.

Caught up by World Cup fever, many football fans loved Robbie's energetic cameo, with words like 'brilliant' and 'awesome' used.

Robbie Williams absolutely loves it. Red leather suit, the sauce #WorldCup

Not everyone enjoyed the British pop icon's performance though.

One unimpressed witness tweeted: '40 seconds into Robbie Williams and this is already the worst World Cup ever.'

Another added: 'Robbie Williams has ruined the World Cup before it's even started. Brilliant'.

And a user called Josh wrote: 'Robbie Williams doing the opening ceremony. The two lowest ranked teams to kick off the World Cup, hopefully this doesn't reflect the tournament'.

Never one to shy away from controversy, Robbie cheekily raised his middle finger at the camera before exiting the field.

Robbie Williams, Let me Entertain you. Feel like I've transported back to #WorldCup 2006.
